Having always been an animal lover, especially a dog lover, I’ve volunteered for rescues for 16 years in various capacities. Helping both in a shelter and behind the scenes doing newsletters and helping with fundraisers, I’m a strong believer in rescuing rather than buying pets. Too many are killed every year because there aren’t enough good safe homes.
Studying basic dog obedience for a year and applying that to shelter dogs, has taught me what dogs want most is to be loved and to please their people. There is always a reason for what they do, and it takes just a little effort to understand that.
I’ve learned quite a bit about pet foods while working at a local pet store. There are a lot of great foods out there, providing a huge range of options for pet parents. It can be daunting.
Life with dogs
Just look up your local area, and you can find all the rescue organizations with adoptable pets. Any kind of pets. ALWAYS choose to adopt not shop for a pet. There are even all breed rescues, so just do a search. Check animal services, humane societies, SPCAs and rescue groups in your area. Wonderful loving pets are out there looking for a good home, without the need to pay lots of money for one. NEVER buy from pet stores, flea markets, Craig’s list or back yard breeders. All those are likely puppy mill dogs, and possibly inbred with medical issues. Do your RESEARCH! Don’t trust pretty pictures on a website at a breeder. If you can’t meet the sire and dam (mom and dad), RUN away, run away fast.
